Ibiza Classic Car Rally
The 4th Rallye de la Sal took place over Easter with 17 Classic Cars chasing the honours - if that is an appropriate term? After all this is a 'tulip rally' requiring an average speed to be maintained over an unidentifiable course. The average speed to be achieved over the first leg was some 32.6 km/hour, a tad over 20 mph, which can be tricky when you have a 6 cylinder, three litre engine under the bonnet. Most contenders spent time twiddling their thumbs in lay-bys to use up the surplus time, but had been previously caught out by an enthusiastic photographer in the hills who was timing the cars before they reached their strategic lay-bys.
Lunch at the restaurant in Cala San Vicente was a civilized affair with nobody even bothering to ask who was winning - simply comparing notes on the point at which they got lost, or realized they'd forgotten to buy fuel before setting off. A detour that would reflect in the mileometer reading and taken into account by the race marshals.
Needless to say the lunch lasted longer than the rally.
A cross country race back to Ibiza town concluded the afternoon with nobody any the wiser as to the leaders or losers.
The next morning saw a repeat rally, but this time in a different direction. Unfortunately the directions (arrows and distances to a next turning) proved inaccurate and nobody found the restaurant destination without having to resort to mobile phones to ring the organizers. Some participants failed to see the humour in this, but ultimately everyone had a whale of a time and no punches were thrown.
