Theatre Trust of Ibiza

Theatre trust of Ibiza

Ibiza Theatre Trust

The Theatre Trust of Ibiza was founded twenty years ago by three English residents on the Island. The original idea was to produce plays and musicals for those English speaking people who appreciated Theatre. The object was to involve as many people as possible whether of a professional background or not. The concept immediately gained support and became a highly successful reality. The Trust decided at an early stage that no show was beyond their reach, and embarked on a series of most entertaining and difficult productions. Their first production was 'Cinderella' at the old cinema on the Santa Eulalia main street. This production raised the money that eventually enabled them to set up the Theatre "Trust" itself. Then followed 'Oliver' at Las Dalias when Juanito donated the use of the theatre for no charge.

As time passed by, and after an enormous amount of effort, it became obvious, particularly with the ever continued support of the local residents that the "Trust" could financially assist local charities. To enable this to be undertaken on a legal basis, the Theatre "Trust" was registered under Spanish Law, giving it charitable status. This in a nutshell enables it to raise money by productions, and to give the profits to recognised charities. To date, the main benefactors have been the Local Control of Cancer, The Spanish Red Cross, the Alzheimer's Association and a Children's Home in Santa Eulalia, all of whom have received substantial donations.

The Theatre Trust has a legally binding constitution and the 100 plus members annually elect a committee who organise every show. The main objective is to include serious plays, musicals and comedies. The membership, in respect of nationalities, has enlarged and includes people from the UK in the main, but also Spanish, Dutch and Germans too. What has been realised, is that music has a universal language, and the shows attract many nationalities both as participants and as an audience. Likewise, those who strut the boards are often very young, or simply very young at heart.

Many people feel that they, as individuals and total amateurs, could never play an active part on a stage; time and time again this has been proved to be totally unfounded. With support and constructive direction, a person who has never before walked on a stage, can play a leading role. But theatre does not start and end there, every production requires assistance in front-of-house, and backstage; someone has to sell tickets, construct and paint the sets, make costumes etc, so there is a part for everyone to play. Accordingly, the trust is always looking for new members who may wish to offer their services as director, producer or programme seller.
So, what is the Theatre trust offering in this its 20th anniversary year. ....

The first event takes place on the evening of October 8th from 7:30 pm at the Sa Plana restaurant near to Santa Gertrudis. The celebration is entitled the "20 Golden Years Academy Awards" and will features stars from many of the shows that the Theatre Trust have staged over the last two decades. Those stars will include some of those who were involved in the very first Theatre Trust productions.
There are less than 200 tickets available, at 35 U each, for this dinner and dance event and these are already selling quickly, because the proceeds will, as usual, go to local charity. For this reason don't delay booking your seat for what promises to be a very memorable occasion.

The next production will take place at Can Ventosa in early December and is to be directed by Barry Spencer - making a spectacular come-back to the island. This show will feature highlights from all of the most successful musicals that the Theatre Trust have performed over the past two decades. More information about this spectacular celebration will follow in our December edition - don't miss it!

Beaches

Bars

Restaurants

There are nearly 60 beaches on Ibiza - most of which are only accessible by cross country vehicles or motocross bikes - ish... here are a selection of over 30 with more to come... such is the hard life of researching beaches..   For some reason there are more bars here than anywhere else in the world put together - or so it seems - a bar stool divers paradise... (The Bars section could be Restaurants since they often do food - and vice versa..)   The Mediterranean is renowned for its good, fresh food. Here you have everything from traditional Ibicencan, Spanish, Thai, Italian, French, West Indian, Curries, Chinese - if you can eat you can find anything you want really....

About Ibiza

Getting Around

Accommodation

It's not all about the clubs, there are the fiestas which seem to happen every other day, the markets etc. Also included is a little potted history, maps, tourist offices, tips, churches etc   For those of you who like delayed trains, cramped tube trains and traffic jams - Ibiza doesn't have them (though the hippy market in Es Canar can get a tad busy) - here's how to get around when you are here.   Accommodation is a nightmare in the summer, but we've got hotel & hostel numbers, and a growing villa, hotel & rental section for those who don't want the usual package holiday.
