There are a number of powerfully mystical places
on Ibiza which have managed to remain enigmatic and mysterious
through an unspoken pact among island dwellers not to disclose
their whereabouts. Thus saving them from being spoilt by the developers
and their concrete mixer.
The most well known of these are familiar names, including Es
Vedra, which being an island comprising only cliffs has escaped
development, Benniras beach which
is now threatened by a development of some 100+ houses, the cave
at Es Cuilleram near Cala San Vicente,
Punta Galera north of San Antonio and Atlantis itself.
Atlantis remains the only one that doesn't appear on the maps,
nor is it signposted from any nearby road or path. Being island
dwellers and thus tied to the unspoken pact, we are unable to
supply directions other than to let you know that you get a spectacular,
if distant, arial view of Atlantis from the Torre des Cap des
Jueu (pirate watch tower) that overlooks Es Vedra. It's directly
below you to the left, but be careful not to fall from the top
of the tower as you enjoy the view. Photos of Atlantis
Ok, so you can see it
- all that remains for you to do is to find a way down to it...
Upon arrival you will find an extraordinary landscape created
over 1,000 years ago when rock was quarried to build the fortress
walls of Ibiza town. Over the subsequent centuries other stonemasons
and sculptors have applied their own touches to the remaining
landscape creating people seemingly emerging from within the rocks,
dragons and other symbolic features surrounded by stalactites
and stalagmites created with rocks, perforated pebbles and lengths
of rope.
A veritable art gallery in the wildest of settings that provides
the necessary inspiration to get you back up the cliff to the
disappointment of everyday reality.
Not a journey for the faint hearted or the wheelchair, but an
unforgettable and haunting experience... |
