Tax Boost Ibiza

by adminman on October 9, 2009

The five mayors on the island all confirmed they would not be raising municipal taxes in 2010.  The good news came after the monthly mayors meeting on Friday, although investment will be cut as a result.

Lurdes Costa, Mayor of Ibiza Town, said her budget would fall by around €6 million in 2010, to €50 million.  She explained this would obviously mean changes would have to be made to her proposed plans, but that they had promised not to raise taxes during the rest of her mandate, and they would be sticking to this promise.

It was a similar story across the board with San Antonio mayor, Jose Sala, admitting the Town Hall was broke.  He revealed income would be down by 20 per cent next year, whilst demanding more financing from Central Government.

His counterpart in Santa Eulalia, Vicent Mari, went further and promised to drop tax in some cases.  He said the current crisis could not be fixed by raising taxes, and the Town Halls needed to be more careful and reduce spending.

Jose Mari Ribas (San Jose) was the only mayor to promise spending would not be cut, claiming extra funding from Central Government would be enough to ensure the budget would be sufficient for next year.
