The race to be the PP’s candidate for the presidency of the Island Council looks to be slowly warming up, after a new candidate emerged. Until now only the current mayor of San Antonio, Jose Sala, has put his name forward for the role, and at one point it appeared it could have been a one-horse race. However, things appear to be changing as the former Councillor for Health, and current spokesman for the PP party in the Island Council, Vicent Serra, said he was considering putting himself forward.
Until now Serra has rejected any possibility of being a candidate, a stance which changed slightly two weeks ago as he hinted he might become involved with the race for the Consell. However on Thursday he blew away any doubt by confirming he was seriously considering becoming an official candidate. Speaking at a press conference he said that while it was obvious Sala had a great deal of support from certain sectors of the party, he too was receiving significant encouragement to present himself. He was said to be considering his position and would make an official statement soon, although he added there was, at the moment, no rush, as the list would not close until 31st May.
It appears most of the support for Serra is coming from Santa Eulalia, San Juan and Ibiza Town, all of whom would prefer to see the former Councillor for Health as their representative, and not Sala, who is seen as having too many links to Pere Palau, the former president, who is not liked in these municipalities. Added to this, Sala remains embroiled in several court cases which do not favour his selection.
