Paul Abrey, Her Majesty’s Consul to the Balearic Islands took up his position in December 2005.

The Consulate is one of the busiest in the world with 3.5million British tourists annually and a British resident population estimated at 60,000.

Paul was born in London and attended Watford Grammar School where he excelled academically and on the sports field. He was selected to represent England in swimming and represented his County at football and rugby.

He went to London School of Economics and achieved a First Class degree in Economics, following which he joined Barclays on the Fast track programme.

He completed the programme in record time and moved in to senior management roles. At 27 he was made a senior Executive of the Group, the youngest ever in the Group’s history as regional Director for Asia Pacific.

He was Group Strategy and Planning Director, reporting to the CEO in the last 2 years of his service at Barclays, during which time the Group underwent a radical strategic review and produced significant profit growth.

During his 15 years with Barclays, Paul also completed a Banking Degree at London University and an MBA at London Business School, where he achieved a distinction.

Paul has always been keen to “give something back” to society and when this role came up he decided now was the time to make the move.

Paul has been a driving force in the modernisation of the Consular service in Spain and particularly in Majorca where he has brought in private sector approaches to update and improve the service provided.
