Happy Friars - British Pub
The Happy Friars is the only proper British bar in Puerto de San Miguel, which is a bit daft because the majority of visitors to this little corner of paradise are British. However, if you fancy a little slice of British and you're in the north of the island – check it out…
A place where children are not only catered for – but welcomed…
As you enter the Puerto de San Miguel this bar faces you as you take the first right turn up the road that leads to the well known caves above the beach. The caves were used by pirates in years gone by to store their treasure, but afterwards they usually stopped off for a drink at the ‘Friars' on the way back down the hill.
At first glance the bar appears to be on the first floor but as you ascend the road you find the main entrance across a huge side terrace with a barbecue and a beautiful view over the valley and surrounded by pine trees.
The bar is traditionally British in appearance and offers the sort of friendly service that you would expect of a Mediterranean bar run by a lucky, happy, smiling English couple – in this case Toby and Sarah.
In addition to the view from the terrace, they have a pool table and table football to keep the kids happy while the grown-ups indulge in a change from the San Miguel and reflect on ‘good old blighty' with Scrumpy Jack, Carling & Caffreys on top to keep the local Spanish lagers on their toes. A finer selection of spirits would also be hard to find.
They have an extensive menu available ranging from breakfast ‘all day long', through a range of other snacks, to a full selection of main meals and ‘daily specials' freshly made by their professional chef.
This is also the Sunday lunch destination for all of those in the know in Puerto de San Miguel.
Food and drink apart, they cater for the sporty types with a Big Screen TV covering all of the sports events on both Spanish and Sky TV - enabling you to take exercise without breaking into a sweat in this uncommonly hot holiday get away…
And if you get really homesick, you can even get those elusive British greetings cards that are almost impossible to find anywhere else in Europe - but will definitely wind up your mates at home.
Open from 6 pm till late every day and from noon at weekends with lunch time food from noon till 3 pm too, they even have ‘proper' high-chairs available for tots.
With entertainment every night ranging from live music, quiz shows, karaoke, pool competitions, bingo and more – you've got to keep an eye on these people to keep up to date in Puerto de San Miguel!
