Café Sidney celebrated 10 years - 2004

Main town

June 2 nd 2004 was the tenth anniversary of the emblematic café / restaurant at the entrance to Eivissa's Marina Botafoch. Throughout this past decade it has established itself as the pre-eminent cosmopolitan meeting place for residents of all nationalities in the marina.

Jörg, the owner, had been visiting the island since the age of 18 from his home town of Berlin and kept his boat moored here for his regular visits. He first spotted the site's potential 17 years ago and watched in disbelief for seven years as the site remained relatively unexploited housing only a small art gallery and Victor's shirt shop.

Jörg took possession of the premises in February 1994 only to discover over a dozen leaks in the roof, a mains water supply coming through a tube resembling a straw and an electrical supply adequate to run a doorbell! There was a lot to be done, but less than four months later they were open for business - a remarkable achievement for Ibiza even nowadays.

The establishment is open every day of the year from 9 am to 3 am except for half a day on Christmas Eve. The first couple of winters were difficult as the marina is quiet at that time of year, but they persevered introducing the now legendary Sunday brunch. This kicked off the winter trade and established the venue as a weekend meeting place for island residents rather than the 'yachties' - who weren't there 'out of season'. Nowadays if the weather is inclement and the terrace is not an option, reservation is essential. They further supplemented the Sunday brunch by introducing an Arabic, Asian or Italian dinner night each Tuesday, thus solving the problem of where to go on those boring winter nights when options are so thin on the ground.

Congratulations to Jörg on his phenomenal success and also on his 50 th birthday next month. He describes his last decade as the best of his life, proving that life really does begin at 40, and now has two beautiful children aged 6 and 10 to help him celebrate this momentous year.
