Ibiza Telephone & Internet |
|
If you have recently moved to Ibiza or are here for some months then internet/telephone is normally a top priority - either for staying in touch with family and friends or for business.
The Spanish telephone company on the Island is 'Telefonica' They have one of the most up to date systems in the world and broadband (ADSL) is now freely available on this Island - although there are still some remote areas where only limited access is available. They are quick to install normally within 10 days and when calling you can ask to speak with an English speaking operator.
To find out more visit the website: http://www.telefonicainenglish.com/adsl.htm
When visiting Ibiza you may need/want to have access to the internet, there are now a number of 'internet cafes' that have opened around the Island and access has become relatively cheap and easy most internet venues charging around 1euro per hour. These places generally have access to 'cheap' telephone lines which can be ideal if you need to call outside of Europe. They are easily recognisable and in Santa Eulalia alone there are at least 7 places. Some within local English bars.
There are also a number of bars and cafes providing 'wi-fi hotspots' - if you happen to have your own laptop with you this is the perfect way to gain access - just buy a coffee and ask for the 'access code' and surf away! Below is a list of a few places that we know of:
| Santa Eulalia |
Internet Shop
On the right of the high street as you enter Santa Eulalia

BUT, again if you're in the pub anyway or simply want to nip in and check mail etc it's fine, and we like the pub so we visit anyway.
Sunsea Bar
This is the German bar on the front and unsurprisingly does a good line in German beer for those who appreciate the difference. They have a large front terrace too where you can enjoy both the beer, the German sausages they offer with that rather nice potato salad and an enormous amount of yachts. They also have one of the better pool tables in town and now have Internet access. Open Thurs to Sunday in Winter from 12am.

Next door to Dona Ana and currently open Friday, Saturday and Sundays this is a live music bar, even in the winter. It can get very busy especially during the summer and notably on the nights when the very popular male strippers perform. Eat your heart out Full Monty, these guys do things you've never even thought possible!

Only 100 yards from the West End but a million miles away from the madness. Open all year, Mon-Sun: 10am - 12pm (Aug: 2am) in winter they close on thursdays - check though before you turn up.
The Ship Inn
C/. Bartolome Vicente Ramon, West End, San Antonio.
Tel: 971 343 432
Mentioned more in the bars section, but basically as far as net access goes in one corner there's one terminal.
John and Denise run one of the great institutions in San Antonio, the Ship Inn on the market square. This is not only a pub but also the local job centre, information service (internet connected), bookmakers and general help and advice spot for the local community. It is really unique, literally priding itself in helping out the young who come here looking for work or people on holiday who need a helping hand in getting themselves organised.
They also run a mail service, help with money transfers, take telephone messages and God knows what else. - We think it's great. On top of all that, the place is a great pub serving a great selection of beers. John has installed Sky on a huge screen so you can watch all the sports and horse racing. While you are there ask the local poet Joe for a quick verse or two. Super people - Super spot. - are we Super condescending or what?
Locutoria
Calle de sta. Agnes

| Ibiza Town |
Chill Bar
Via Punica 49, Ibiza Town.
Tel: 971 399 736
Opened in September, this ambient, bright and airy little cafe offers new millenium technology with dominos, chess, playing cards and some cool paintings/sculptures by a bloke called ´Barnaby 99´ thrown in. With dual ISDN lines the connections are fast and easy. It´s just off the Avenida España, only a hop, skip and a jump from the Vara de Rey in Ibiza. The tag line on the menu and business cards is "For all your internet and bagel needs."
A selection of nearly fifty different combinations of bagels plus sandwiches, salads, soups and a range of other treats that you wouldn't normally find in a town centre bar, but might expect in a new age venue such as this. You might find Swahili useful if you need to use the toilet, but then toilet door language is making a bid for recognition as a legitimate field of art. As well as Martin, whose baby this, you'll also find lots of other people at the six computers providing internet access. Chill by name and very much chill by nature. A small amount of room for working. Open all year, Mon-Fri: 10am - 12pm, Sat & Sun: 12am - 12pm.
The Mana
971 31 39 00
By the El Divino apartments (ie on the road to pacha). It has a lovely terrace and the usual selection of beers, etc. They also have a mini market and sell club tickets. An interesting concept - a launderette & net cafe. They sell soft drinks & yoga & beach mats as well - Open 12am - 3am, unlikely to be open after the season finishes.
Cafe Kumharas (El Tiempo)
C/. Miguel Coleta Soler, Ibiza.
Also recently acquired an internet kiosk in addition to their many other facilities. Just in between the Vara de Rey and the old city wall by the Placa del Parc, this used to be an old cinema and retains the art-deco feel, but has now been brought into the new millenium by the people who ran Kumhara's in San Antonio last summer. In addition to an Internet kiosk there is a Tapas bar with cool music downstairs and a comfy bit upstairs in what would have been the Circle if it was still a cinema. Open from 9pm until late, summer only. |
| Es Canar |
Bar Beaulochs
Tel: 971 339 081
Es Canar, Ibiza.
Bar Pumuky (aka Beau - Lochs) can of course be read in many different ways - which in every way sums up the distinctive humour of Nick, who runs an excellent bar and terrace with his lovely wife Mary. We can 100% guarantee that you will have your ears ringing with his unique welcome, friendliness, stories and general carry-on. A bar not for the weary and sad.
They are situated just off the front in Es Cana next to the only Chemist in town and have a great range of beers, cocktails and very reasonably priced good food - also probably the cheapest beer in Es Canar. At night the terrace catches a light sea breeze to help get over the beach and aid the beer to slide down. Have fun all of you of Bravehearts. They now have Internet access via a new multi-media pc - Open weekends only in Winter |
| Playa Den Bossa |
Moorea Beach Bar & Restaurant Internet cafe.
(Between Pago Pago & Bora Bora Beach bars)
This "cafe" has a full bar & is quite spacious with a pool table and a few video games. Net access is via 6 kiosks - there are no workspaces so you have to stand up and they use little track balls instead of a mouse. 500ptas for 30 minutes. Open from 10am until late, summer only. |
| Net Radio |
From July 2000 Mambo Cafe in San Antonio set up a 24 hour live internet radio station with sponsorship from the Swedish multimedia company DEO. Broadcasting live from the record decks in Mambo's the realtime audio & video is then transmitted from a satellite dish on the roof direct to Sweden where it's the relayed to internet.
As well as the live music feed they also have 3 video cameras: one on the DJ, one on the decks & of course the obligatory sunset camera. A forth camera is portable and is used for DJ interviews and roaming around in Mambo's or on the beach. Upstairs in the "office" they also a full set of decks with 4 turntables & mixer to do their own broadcasts. If all of this wasn't enough they have been recording various club nights and then broadcasting them over the internet when the cafe is closed. In addition to recording the entire Judge Jules night at Eden every Sunday and then rebroadcasting over the following week they have been recording other nights, for example they recently broadcast Frankie Knuckles set at Pacha live over the internet.
As well as the obvious big name DJ's who play at mambo's like Carl Cox and Judge Jules who play at the pre-parties at Mambo's, the resident dj's Andy Warbuton, Danny Whitehead & Pete Gooding and net radio resident Ed Sinclair also get the chance to be exposed to a worldwide audience. Although Mambo's close at the end of October the website will continue. |
