Ibiza is famous for the quality of its tattoos, and therefore by definition the quality of the island's tattoo artists. This may be partly because tattoos are more visible on Ibiza , because people wear less clothes here, but is more likely to be down to the multi-cultural mix of influences to be found on this island.

In the case of ‘Kali', who have been established in Es Canar for almost ten years, the combination is made up of Carlos, a Mexican visual artist, and Lucia, a Spanish graphic artist and needlepoint expert. They perfected their art under the watchful eye of International experts, practicing on pig's ears and footballs, until they were sufficiently proficient to move on to real people. And like any other good tattooists they have their own distinctive artistic style, which sets them apart from the competition.

The proof of the pudding, though, rests with their results and these are impressive. Many of their regular customers are island residents who keep coming back for more, which has to be as good a reference as you could wish for on the island. Examples of the couple's work can, in fact, be found all over the island. Ask almost any of the local island waiters to proudly display their own collection and they will inevitably point you in the direction of Carlos and Lucia. Many visiting tourists return every year to update their own collections – they won't go anywhere else!

Always at the cutting edge of tattoo fashion, the pair observe that Chinese and Japanese styles are very big this year, whereas last year people preferred dragons and their derivatives. However, the names of relatives remain timelessly popular and, seeing the examples of their precise reproductions displayed on the studio walls, many opt for their football team's badge, or the name of the team emblazoned from one shoulder blade to the other.

From their beautiful, airy studio they offer the full range of services covering permanent, henna and transfer tattoos in addition to piercing, with a full range of appropriate jewellery that decorates the shop front and front terrace. Inside one is immediately struck by the view through the wall to ceiling window overlooking the swimming pool at the rear and the sea beyond – nothing like the dingy room that the handle ‘tattoo studio' normally conjures up?

This is because they are very proud of their work. Their philosophy is that anybody should be able to see them at their work and appreciate both how clean and well equipped their workplace is. One might even find inspiration in the tattoo that somebody else is in the process of having applied?

After all they are officially registered to prove their professional status and the higene standards that they maintain. They even offer the services of a hypnotist for those who want a really big tattoo and can't bear the pain involved without a little help…

Open every evening from 6 pm. till late, they open all day on Wednesdays for the famous weekly hippy market in the village. Because they insist on operating in an entirely professional fashion they have an appointment service, because it's not advisable to expose a new tattoo to the sun for the best part of a month. In fact without a waterproof patch you shouldn't go in the water and risk getting it wet for ten days – although seawater is less harmful than swimming pools. Health considerations are less onerous for piercings.
