Top 5 things to do on your stay in Port de Sant Miguel

Family resort

1. Treat yourself to a meal in Restaurant Port Balansat. It's the large white restaurant to the left of the beach (if you're facing seaward). Balanzat is famous island-wide as one of, if not the, best fish restaurants in existence, and that means anywhere. You know that old adage, 'Go where the locals go'? Well, Balanzat attracts not only the locals of Port de Sant Miguel, but Ibicencs from all over the island. Every taxi driver knows this place, and with good reason. The food is incredibly fresh, filling and, best of all, very good value for money. So whisper it among yourselves, for if word gets out and the good people of Balanzat cotton on, this may well not last. Make this restaurant numero uno on your to-do list, before the locals realise just what a great deal they're giving away.

2. Visit the pirate caves. If you've never been inside a cave before, then you're clearly not from High Wycombe, or Yorkshire, for that matter. These caves, though, are truly something to behold. A smuggler's paradise in the last couple of centuries, they have been opened up for the public and the guided tours are well worth the modest admission fee.

3. Visit the pirate tower, aaargh, me hearties! Seriously, it's a less than strenuous walk from the beach in order to check out a little of Ibiza's piratical history, and then treat yourself to a refresher on the tiny beach at the cliffs of one of the world's most exclusive residences.

4. If you never glimpsed hippies in their natural habitat, well, now's your chance. Every Sunday evening the die-hard longhairs of yesteryear gather on the beach at Benirras to bang their drums in proclamation to some demi-urgic god or another. It's a 3km walk, up over the hills, a fairly undemanding, albeit uphill, walk, and well worth the effort. If you're going to experience one aspect of delicious Ibizan sensual freedom this year, make this one a must.

5. Spend a day at the beach, of course. This is definitely one of the prettiest tourist beaches on the island, with plenty to do to keep both adults and children alike entertained for the entire day easily. You can rent a boat, go water-skiing, try the speeding water-banana, there are pedaloes and canoes for hire also. The fluttering blue flag at the entrance to the beach is a standard of cleanliness of which the locals of Port de Sant Miguel are justifiably proud.
