At the southernmost point of the island there is a large area of low marshland that since time immemorial has been used as salt flats.
This area made Ibiza the centre of a lucrative salt trade serving the Mediterranean. Originally the basis of the island's economy, it is still an important natural asset.
Throughout the Middle Ages Scandinavian fisherman would stop here to acquire the supplies of salt that they needed to preserve their fish during the long journey home. So the mountains of what looks like snow at first glance have been around for quite some time.
Lately the area has acquired the status of nature reserve, much to the relief of the numerous flamingos who visit here each year on their holidays |
