Ibiza Weather Summer
Climate |
Summer in Ibiza is of course the most popular tourist draw, and with fine reason. Baking beaches, warm seas and gentle evening breezes make this the perfect time of the year to get away from the so-called 'English summer'. Whether or not you've got access to a hire car, there is stacks to do on the island, and there are buses, taxis and good old leg-power to get you where you need to be. Click here to find a beach on our comprehensive list within walking distance of wherever you are, and directions to get there. So if you find the beach nearest your hotel just that little too crowded or noisy, let us guide you to some of the more elusive little beauty spots that litter the coastline. In July and August, Ibizan temperatures reach their peaks. 30°C is not unknown, so extra care and common sense is required at this time of the year. The sun is at it's strongest between 11am and 3pm, and it is in these four hours that the greatest danger to your skin lies. Sunburn is unattractive and very painful, so make sure you use plenty of oil with a high SPF (sun protection factor). Better yet, use these hours to take a siesta and break for lunch. If you want to get back home with a tan you can show off, then the later afternoon rays will do as good a job on your skin as you need. If you need more information on SPF or other sun safety, visit our 'Stay safe in the sun' guide. Summer evenings are very mild, and light cotton is the favoured choice of clothing. Evenings and night-time are also when the infamous Spanish mosquito comes out to play. One popular method of fending off the little swines is the lemon-scented 'citronella' spray. You should be able to find this at any chemist (farmacia - look for the big green flashing cross which seems to be the equivalent over here of the ubiquitous English barber pole). Douse your ankles and feet, your arms and hands liberally. In fact, just aim it at any flesh you have on display. This will give you not only added mozzie-protection, but a nice lemony-fresh odour too! Water is in scarce supply in summer, so it would be wise to use the shower rather than the bath. In July and August, rain is extremely rare, and though not entirely unheard of, you'll be very lucky to catch a refreshing burst at this time of the year. The risk of forest fires is also at its height in the summer, so there are two absolute 'do-nots' to mention. Smokers, please make sure your cigarettes are extinguished thoroughly and under no circumstances should you hurl a butt out of the car window. Entire hillsides of beautiful cypress and pine trees have been lost due to exactly this kind of carelessness, I kid you not. When you go to the Tabacconist (Tabac) shop to buy your smokes, it's a good idea to pick up one of those 'beach ashtrays', they look like little terracotta pots. They're a brilliant idea, I use one myself. Secondly, leave no litter. Glass and clear plastics are a particular danger, due to the fact that they can act like magnifying glasses in the sunshine and can cause more fires. All litter should be taken back with you and disposed of at your hotel or villa or one of the many big green bins by the sides of the roads. Ibiza is a gorgeous island, so let's help keep it that way.
