Terravita Gardens - Back to Ibiza Holidays

PestsIn 1840 the German chemist Justus von Liebig managed to make a considerable increase in crop production by using synthesised products from chemical origin as fertilisers. Later, other scientists developed in the same way other products to eradicate plagues and diseases. Hormones and a wide range of products proved themselves again to be useful in securing the world food production. This historical process was called “the green revolution”. However what people did not know at that time was that this so called “green revolution” was more of a step back than a step forward and today is considered as one of the darker spells in history, due to the uncontrolled, non-discriminated use of these products in the agricultural field. All micro organisms and organisms producing beneficial substances in a natural way, were systematically eliminated as the soil was being contaminated and the environment was becoming polluted. As a consequence, vast extensions of fertile soil became completely useless unless even higher doses of chemical fertilisers were used, causing as a result a harmful effect on the consumer’s health due to their high residuality. Besides that there also was the increase in the environmental pollution and the decrease in benefits due to the high costs. Plagues and illnesses became more and more resistant with each application needing to increase the doses and thereby increasing the toxicity levels in order to control them.
